There was a running gag on the old Mary Tyler Moore Show that I loved: No matter how carefully she planned it, how scrupulously she edited the guest list, no matter how much work went into the food and entertainment, every party she gave was a disaster.
I wonder if she ever considered inviting James Joyce.
