James Joyce's 'The Sisters' may be regarded as an affirmation of faith rather than the story of a failed priest. Previous interpretations have focused on the theme of Father Flynn's failed attempts to solve the mystery of the Eucharist. However, reemphasis on the novel's title supports the contention that the main protagonists are Nannie and Eliza. Their brother's intellectual failure and inability to breach the gap with faith has a positive effect on their own faith.
