A human relationship without love is delineated in James Joyce's 'The Sister.' Imagery, irony, structure, point of view, archetypes and underlying myths are used to present the story's theme. The relationship between the priest and the boy lacks true friendship due to the ulterior motives in both of them. The priest desires to achieve immortality in passing on the priesthood to the boy while the boy himself desires the prestige motivates him to cultivate his relationship with the priest. These egotistical motives denies the grwoth of true friendship between them.
