In 1806 British diplomat Thomas Bruce, seventh earl of Elgin, purchased a number of Greek marble sculptures from the Turks, who ruled Greece at that time. The Elgin Marbles, as they came to be known, were purchased by the British government in 1816. The sculptures, the most significant pieces of which were created by fifth century B.C. master sculptor Pheidias, sparked a furor of enthusiasm for the culture of ancient Greece ("Elgin Marbles").
