Hardy published many of his novels, including Tess of the d'Urbervilles,
in magazines before they were brought out in book form. This is because
magazine editors often demanded that Hardy rewrite large sections of his books
that were thought to be too outspoken and frank. This Hardy did, but then
proceeded to restore the text to the original form when it appeared as a book.
