Thomas Hardy was born on June 2, 1840 in the small village of Higher
Bockhampton, in the parish of Stinsford, in the county of Dorset, which lies
in southwestern England and which was to be immortalized under the name of
Wessex in Hardy's literary work. Hardy's father was a master mason, or what
