IT is a scene immortalised by Thomas Hardy. Artists too have been enchanted by the peaceful prospect of ancient mill, river, weir and footbridge.

But planners have been accused of wrecking the spot after allowing a [pounds sterling]1million ' contemporary' house to be built on the banks of the Stour in Sturminster Newton, Dorset.

'It's like putting a block of flats in the Haywain,' said local artist Paul Hart, referring to Constable's celebrated painting of another River Stour - in Suffolk.
