Egdon Heath:

It is quite generally agreed that the heath is as strong a character as
any in the novel-probably the strongest. It is the unique force that touches
and molds all lives. The whole novel is played on Egdon Heath as on a stage,
and the heath, in its turn, plays upon all the characters, molding their lives
by its pervasive influence. H. M. Tomlinson in his essay in The Saturday
