1812: Born in Rouen into a family of doctors.
1840: Studies law in Paris.
1844: Diagnosed as suffering from a nervous disease, possibily epilepsy. Fails law exams and devotes himself to writing. Father buys him a house at Croisset, on the Seine between Paris and Rouen, where he lives with his mother.
1846: Meets the writer Louise Colet, who becomes his mistress for nine years, although they meet infrequently. Only romantic interlude in his life.
1849: Travels with Maxime du Camp through North Africa, Syria, Turkey, Greece, and Italy.
1851: Begins Madame Bovary, which takes him five years ...
