Critical Commentary of the Three Tales

The Three Tales were written in 1870, during a prolonged vacation which
Flaubert was allowing himself from the agonies involved in the writing of his
last novel, Bouvard and Pecuchet. It was the most enthusiastically received of
all Flaubert's works, and shows him at the mature height of his powers. Two of
the Tales, A Simple Heart and The Legend of St. Julian the Hospitaler, are
unquestionably masterpieces of short fiction.
