The scene of Herodias is the citadel of Machaerus, stronghold of the
Tetrarch Herod Antipas, ruler of Palestine under the Roman protectorate. It is
dawn, and Antipas is staring out over the battlements at the arid landscape
below him, jagged and deeply shadowed in the morning light. In the distance he
sees the camp of the King of Arabs, whose daughter he divorced to marry
Herodias, the wife of his own brother, Agrippa. Antipas is awaiting help from
the Roman governor of Syria, Vitellius, but in the meantime is considering a
number ...
