Section One

Julian's father is lord of country in which there has been peace for
many years. A just and noble man, he lives with his pious, beautiful wife in
a medieval castle complete in every detail: with moat and towers, garden and
arbors, chapel and barns. The castle overflows with the accumulated goods of
peace: tapestries and linens, casks of wine and bags of gold, piles of unused
weapons in the armory. After many prayers, a son is born to them, and a great
