A Simple Heart opens with a picture of the maid, Felicite, and the Aubain
household sometime around Felicite's sixty-eighth year. For half a century
the women of Pont-l'Eveque have envied Mme. Aubain for her servant, a model of
loyalty and efficiency who can wash, sew, iron, cook, fatten chickens, and
make butter to perfection. Mme. Aubain had been left a widow with two young
children and a small income, and had retired to Pont-l'Eveque some fifty years
