As Emma becomes more involved in her affair, she grows obsessed by the
thought of difficulties arising, particularly discovery. One morning as she is
crossing the fields after a rendezvous, she runs into Binet, the
tax-collector. He is almost as alarmed as she; he has been hunting duck
illegally and is on the lookout for police. "You're out early?" he says.
"Yes," she falters, "I've been to the nurse's, to see my baby." Then she
