Part Two, Chapter One

Flaubert leads the reader on an imaginary tour of Yonville, the sleepy
backward little town which is to be the Bovarys' new home. Leaving the
highroad, the traveller passes through an outer zone of ramshackle outhouses,
walled yards and low, thatched cottages. In the center of town are the church,
dilapidated and poorly furnished; the market place; the Town Hall, built like
a miniature "Greek temple"; the pharmacy of Monsieur Homais with its red and
green apothecary jars and placards ...
