In these turbulent, strained, even shattering times, books _ usually so capable of transporting us away from everyday absurdities and stresses _ clearly have their work cut out for them. No wonder 2002 was another bewitching year for Hogwarts, but it also was a surprisingly fine time for first novels, for stellar second novels, for books of remembrance and contemplation.
