E.M. Forster's short story "The Machine Stops" is the first example of 20th-century dystopia. Forster imagined a world dominated by a Machine, where conformism was enforced by rigid social conventions and repressing diversity. The story presents the impossibility of having a stable society where individuals can be spontaneous and creative. The portrayal of a grim alternate reality allows examination of present society.
