"IF I HAD TO CHOOSE between betraying my country and betraying my friend," E. M. Forster once wrote, "I hope I should have the guts to betray my country." This quote teaches us a lot, particularly that dead British novelists made for good drinking buddies and horrible spies. But Forster's sentiment is worth considering. There is no feeling worse than the feeling of betrayal; it is the most soul-pulverizing of human emotions.
