On board HMS Indomitable , 1797, during the French Wars: In a short Prologue, Capt. Vere , now an old man, reviews his career, and especially the summer of 1797. On board the Indomitable , a boat is seen returning from a press-ganging operation. The new recruits are questioned by the evil master-at-arms, Claggart . They incl. Billy Budd , who has a stammer. Billy leads a chorus of praise for the captain, Starry Vere. A fight breaks out when Billy finds
