Philip Nolan was a proud, undisciplined, quick-tempered young man who was
eager to earn fame. His father fought in the Revolutionary War. Philip was
born in Kentucky and raised on a plantation. He met few educated Americans,
but he met a number of French merchants and Spanish officers. Even when his
father once hired a tutor for him, the tutor was an Englishman. Philip learned
