You could purchase the complete novels of Charles Dickens in 20 volumes, most of Samuel Johnson in 16, the best-known books of William Makepeace Thackeray in 14 and -- if you wanted them -- matched sets devoted to such various figures as George Meredith, John Burroughs, Robert Ingersoll and the much-maligned Edward Bulwer- Lytton.
