Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812, in Portsea. His father,
John Dickens, was a minor clerk in the Navy Pay Office; his father's parents
had been servants and his mother's parents only slightly higher on the social
scale. John Dickens was a happy-go-lucky, improvident man whose family often
