Chapter Thirty-Nine

Since his escape at Chertsey, Bill Sikes had lain ill in his room, tended
by Nancy who had by now pawned everything of value to keep him alive. The two,
much altered by their ordeal, were finally visited by Fagin, the Artful
Dodger, and Charley Bates on the night after Monks' encounter with the
Bumbles. Bringing wine and food, they were surprised to find Nancy and Sikes
in such desperate circumstances, but the wine and the food soon produced an
