Hard Times is remarkable among the novels of Dickens not only for its
brevity, but for its small cast of characters. In contrast to the Pickwick
Papers, in which there are about three hundred and fifty characters, or to
David Copperfield, in which some forty characters play some role, in Hard
Times there are only seventeen people who have a part of any significance.
