Chapter 1: Another Thing Needful

Louisa awakes in her old bed at home in her old room. Her little sister
tells her that it was Sissy who had put her there, tended her, and who had
made the room so cheerful. Louisa notices that her sister's face is beaming,
so unlike her own when she had been her age. "I'm sure it must be Sissy's
doing," her sister tells her in explanation.

Her father enters and tenderly asks how she is. "He spoke in a subdued
and troubled voice, very different from his usual dictatorial manner, ...
