The justification for a book such as this is that it enables the average
student to read with perception and understanding a work he might otherwise
have found hopelessly perplexing and therefore distasteful. David Copperfield
is a difficult work, although it has long been thought of as one of those
novels in that literary limbo known as "Juvenile Classics." To a generation of
