On her visits to Richard and Ada, Esther often meets Harold Skimpole,
idly playing the piano and exerting his harmful influence on Richard.
Disturbed by that influence, Esther leaves with "Charley" for Somers Town, in
an effort to persuade Skimpole to stay away. Surprisingly he agrees cheerful,
admitting the Richard and Ada are losing their "youthful poetry which was so
