Originally written for children only to become enormously popular with adults, Pinocchio (1863) merges the youthful and playful elements that Carlo Collodi intended for his target audience with a range of social, cultural, and political allegories. This text serves instructors remarkably well in the difficult task of translating historical and political realities from one culture and language to another, thus lending credence to Giuseppe Prezzolini's remark that the tale "is the testing ground for foreigners; whoever understands the beauty of Pinocchio understands Italy" (Perella 2).
