'Christabel,' Samuel Taylor Coleridge's unfinished poem that baffled readers for 200 years is considered a failure since the narrative voice used cannot clearly describe what is happening. The narrative becomes incoherent especially in portions that are distressing. The theories of Julia Kristeva on poetic language and abjection or wretchedness will be used to expound the textual aporias and other aspects spread throughout the narrative. There is an ongoing debate concerning the real relationship of Geraldine and Christabel as well as other aspects that are unclear to the readers.
