Poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge enlisted in the army to escape the debts left over from his irresponsible spending. Lacking soldierly quality, Coleridge avoided his chores by writing correspondence for his comrades in exchange for their grooming of his horse and cleaning of his kit. With the aid of his brothers, Coleridge was granted a discharge on the grounds of insanity. He returned to the university and accepted the disciplinary action awaiting him. Nevertheless, he failed to finish his degree when he left the university for good.
