SINCE Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner in 1798, a dead albatross has been a symbol of bad luck.
Now the Big Bird Race, a sponsored betting event designed to highlight the plight of the endangered seabirds, has suffered spectacular misfortune.
Of 18 Tasmanian shy albatrosses making a satellitemonitored 6,000-mile migration to South Africa, each sponsored by the likes of Jerry Hall, Jeremy Vine and Olivia Newton-John, only three are still in the running.
The remaining 15 are missing, presumed dead.
