On May 5, 1905 Robert Sengstacke Abbott [1870-1940] was standing on South Side street corners selling a four-page newspaper- handbills filled with local news, which he called the Chicago Defender. As the years went by the new Chicago paper became 32 pages and Robert Sengstacke Abbott, becoming one of the first African American millionaires, had succeeded against the odds in journalism.

His journey began as a student from the state of Georgia who graduated from Hampton Institute with a degree in printing, and moved to Chicago in 1897. He worked at odd jobs while earning a law degree at Kent ...
