Booker Taliaferro Washington was born a slave. He grew up to play an
important part in helping blacks improve their education.
Booker T. Washington was born on a plantation near Hale's Ford, Virginia. From the age of 9, he worked in the coal mines all day and taught himself to write at night. At the age of 20, he graduated from Hampton Normal and Agricultural School, where he later became an instructor.
In 1881, Washington was asked to establish a new school for black students in Tuskegee, Alabama. He founded and became the first president of Tuskegee Institute. Under his ...
