* Booker T. Washington was freed from slavery as a nine-year-old and sent to school for the first time. Known all his life as just "Booker," he discovered that all his schoolmates had last names. To avoid embarrassment, he quickly adopted a distinguished surname from history. Later in life, he discovered that his mother had given him the last name "Talliaferro" when he was born but neglected to mention it to him. So Booker added T. as his middle initial.
