He grew to greatness in Malden, and his legacy is being celebrated in February, which is Black History Month.
This month and continuing into April, area elementary school children are invited to tour the town where famed black educator Booker T. Washington grew up. The Booker T. Washington Tour is being presented by West Virginia State College.
Malden is where Washington came to live after the end of the Civil War, said Patricia Cline, director of special events at State.
"We're doing these tours to reflect on his childhood in West Virginia," Cline said.
