It is ironic that Booker T. Washington, the most powerful Black American of
his time and perhaps of all time, should be the Black leader whose claim to
the title is most often dismissed by the lay public. Blacks often question
his legitimacy because of the role that favor by Whites played in his
assumption of power, and Whites often remember him only as an educator, or
confuse him with George Washington Carver, as "that great Negro scientist."
