Terry McMillan ... Mary Higgins Clark ... Jane Austen? Yes, the mainstay of English lit classes has a book on The New York Times best-seller list.

``Sense and Sensibility,'' the movie tie-in edition from Signet with Emma Thompson on the cover, is No.10 on the paperback list for Jan. 21.

What's more, Everyman's Library/Knopf has printed 50,000 copies of its hard-cover movie tie-in of ``Sense and Sensibility'' _ significantly more than the few thousand copies normally sold in a year _ and they're flying out of stores.

And excitement over the novel has spilled over to the rest ...
