The Jane Austen Book Club has been adapted from Karen Joy Fowler's best seller by Memoirs of a Geisha screenplay writer turned debut director Robin Swicord.
The 105-minute film contrasts the leading characters of Jane Austen's novels with the lives of five Californian women - and a cycling, science fiction nerd called Grigg (Hugh Dancy).
They all meet in a coffee shop, pick a novel each and discuss them one by one. Their lives resonate with various characters and, after dotting the film with a series of brief encounters, Swicord adds a neat bow.
