Nurse Rooke in Jane Austen's 'Persuasion' serves as the author's self-portrait and as Austen's role model for contemporary single women. Admiral Croft's wife, who seems to be her husband's equal partner, has frequently been interpreted as Jane Austen's portrayal of the ideal woman and the Croft marriage as the ideal marriage.
