This week was Jane Austen week in Bath. A lovely TV producer with a wicked streak decided it would be a novel and amusing idea for me to become an 18th-century lady for the day and to learn what it would have been like to live as a woman in Jane Austen's time.

Fortuitously, intrusive media does equip you with a sense of resilience and I was happy to parade arou- nd the lovely spa town dressed in what can only be described as Grandma's nightie and a bonnet in the interests of research.
