ARISTOPHANES'S play The Frogs opened to rave reviews in Athens in 405 BC. The dramatis personae include the Greek god of wine and drunkness, Dionysus, the heroic warrior, Heracles, and a Chorus of Frogs.
The play's revival in Sicily, circa 2002, has set the Italian government's teeth on edge. At issue are three large caricatures of the Italian prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, with two of his ministers, that provide the backdrop for the set. Critics have interpreted them as an allusion to modern tyrants.
