The Clouds (423 B.C.)
Background:
Riding on the wave of success, Aristophanes produced what he thought was
his best comedy at the Great Dionysia in 423 B.C. The Clouds, however, was too
obviously a didactic piece, and the Athenians voted it the third and lowest
prize. Although the play has fine lyric passages, it is too much a
presentation of Aristophanes' educational ideas and his dislike of sophist
instruction.
