Greek comedy by Aristophanes , produced in the spring of 411 BC (probably at the Lenaea rather than the Dionysia; it is not known whether the play won first prize). This was an alarming time for Athens: the Sicilian Expedition had ended in disaster in 413 BC, a large part of her empire was in revolt, and her enemy Sparta had made an advantageous alliance with the Persian satrap Tissaphernēs.
