Patañjali [fl. 150 BC or 2nd century BC] is one of the 18 siddhars in the Tamil siddha tradition. He is the compiler of the Yoga Sutras, an important collection of aphorisms on Yoga practice. In the Vyakarana tradition, Patanjali is believed to have lived in the first century B.C. in Varanasi. The Yoga Sutra is popular worldwide for the precepts regarding practice of Raja Yoga and its philosophical basis. "Yoga" in traditional Hinduism involves inner contemplation, a system of meditation practice and ethics.
