The Pillars of Society (original Norwegian title: Samfundets støtter) first written in 1877. He had great trouble writing this play which came before the series of masterpieces which made him famous throughout the world. The ending is the most criticised feature, since Bernick is clearly guilty of attempted murder but gets off unscathed, but successfully illustrates that the rich and powerful are often selfish and corrupt. Translated by R. Farquharson Sharp.

The triumph of a community ensnared

Karsten Bernick, a shipbuilder, resurrects his fortunes with something less than the truth. By serendipity, his community connive with him in a growing web of illusion, of falsehood. Almost to mass murder. Isn't is satisfying that here, unlike his later plays, truth not only prevails but with celebration?
