Commenting on the line "To throw the 'sultry ray' of young Desire" in Wordsworth's 1793 version of the Descriptive Sketches, editor Eric Birdsall follows the editions of E. de Selincourt and Arthur Beatty respectively in citing Thomas Gray's Progress of Poesy for "young Desire": "O'er her warm cheek, and rising bosom, move / The bloom of young Desire, and purple light of Love" (40-41). One would like to point in similar fashion to the source Wordsworth had echoed and acknowledged by putting quotation marks around "sultry ray."
