The Two April Mornings
This is one of the Matthew poems. They have more of a dramatic structure
than either the Lucy poems or "Lucy Gray." The nostalgia of the Matthew poems
is focused away from the poet, unlike the poems about Lucy and Lucy Gray. They
are not as subjective; the poet's involvement does not seem to be as personal.
Matthew is thinking of the past in both "The Two April Mornings" and "The
Fountain." Who is Matthew? He is obviously not the Matthew of "Expostulation
and Reply," the Matthew said to have his historical prototype in William
