With regard to the treatment of a generally common theme, it may be a
worthwhile procedure to read this poem immediately after the Lucy poems. We
have another Lucy who becomes merged into the nature that surrounds her,
although the circumstances are more definitely and elaborately narrative than
in any of the Lucy poems.

Many a time had the poet heard of Lucy Gray. He had actually seen her
once, once when he crossed the wild. Lucy's life had been spent in solitude on
