She Dwelt Among The Untrodden Ways

Lucy was living alone, like a violet half hidden from the eye by the
stone beside which it grew, or like a solitary star, more brilliant in the
heavens just because of its aloneness. The third stanza informs us, with a
kind of abruptness, that Lucy has died.

Comment:

This poem contains what is probably the most famous two figures in the
whole of the Lucy group.

A violet by a mossy stone
Half hidden from the eye!
- Fair as a star, when only one
Is shining in the sky.
