H.G. Wells (1866 – 1946) is remembered for many works of fiction, including The Invisible Man, The Time Machine, and The War of the Worlds. His contemporary, Jules Verne (1828 – 1905), is also remembered for numerous works of fiction such as Around the World in Eighty Days and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.
